what is an iron infusion?

An iron infusion is a medical treatment where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) drip. It’s used to treat iron deficiency anemia when oral iron supplements are ineffective, not tolerated, or when a rapid increase in iron levels is needed. This procedure helps raise iron levels, improving red blood cell production and boosting energy. Iron infusions are often recommended for individuals with severe iron deficiency, chronic conditions that impair iron absorption, or those who experience significant blood loss.

who needs an iron infusion?

An iron infusion is typically needed by individuals with iron deficiency anemia who cannot raise their iron levels through oral supplements. It is recommended for those with chronic conditions like inflammatory bowel disease that impair iron absorption, those who are intolerant to oral iron, individuals with significant blood loss, or those needing rapid correction of iron levels. It’s also used for people with chronic kidney disease, where maintaining adequate iron levels can be challenging.

can i get an iron infusion if i’m pregnant?

Yes, you can receive an iron infusion while pregnant, but only in the second trimester and beyond. Iron infusions are sometimes recommended during pregnancy if a woman has iron deficiency anemia that cannot be corrected with oral iron supplements, or if she has significant side effects from taking them. The decision to administer an iron infusion during pregnancy depends on the severity of the anemia, the potential risks, and the benefits to both the mother and the baby. The Nurse Practitioner at Thrive will review your full health history during the virtual consult appointment. When possible, it is always recommended to review your options with your OB/GYN. 

are there side effects?

Common side effects of an iron infusion include pain or swelling at the injection site, headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and back or joint pain. Rare but more serious side effects can include allergic reactions (such as rash or difficulty breathing), low blood pressure, fever, or chest pain. At Thrive, we have an experienced nurse on-site to handle severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, and we always keep emergency medications, oxygen, and the necessary equipment available in the clinic. Some delayed side effects may occur after you leave the clinic, such as mild headaches, fatigue, or body aches, which usually resolve on their own. Most side effects are temporary, but if any severe reactions occur at home, it is advised to seek immediate medical attention. 

what type of iron do you use?

We use Venofer (iron sucrose), administered in doses ranging from 100mg to 300mg per infusion. Your dose is personalized based on your bloodwork and health history. We also use Monoferric (ferric derisomaltose) which comes in 500mg and 1000mg doses. We carry Venofer in clinic, but patient’s receiving Monoferric must fill their prescription at their preferred pharmacy and bring it with them to their appointment. Not all pharmacies have Monoferric in stock, so ordering it can take 1-3 days to arrive at your pharmacy. 

how many infusions will i need?

Most patients require 3–5 infusions of Venofer, spaced about one week apart, but this varies depending on your individual iron levels and overall health. For patients prescribed Monoferric, they will require 1-2 infusions on average. 

how long does the infusion take?

Infusions typically take 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the dose being given. We’ll provide you with preparation and aftercare instructions and let you know what to expect ahead of time. You can also view the pre and post care instructions above. 

how often will i need iron infusions?

The frequency of iron infusions depends on your individual health condition and how your body responds to treatment. Some people may need a single infusion, while others may require multiple sessions over weeks or months, as recommended by your healthcare provider. On average, patients require approximately 3-5 infusions, which is done on a weekly or bi-weekly basis determined by the Nurse Practitioner who creates your unique treatment plan. 

how soon will i feel better after iron infusions?

You may start feeling better within a few days to a week after your first iron infusion. Full benefits and improved energy may take a few weeks to become apparent, after your final iron infusion, as your iron levels stabilize. 

can i drive after an iron infusion?

You can generally drive after an iron infusion, but some people may experience mild dizziness or fatigue. If you feel unwell or uncertain, it’s best to arrange for someone to drive you home, especially if this is your first infusion or if you feel any discomfort during or after the procedure. If you have a mild reaction, and are given an allergy medication, you will need someone to drive you home after your appointment. Medications like Benadryl can make you drowsy, making it unsafe to drive. 

do i need a referral for an iron infusion?

No referral is needed. If you’re feeling fatigued, run down, or suspect you might have low iron, you can self-refer and start the process anytime by emailing admin@thrivewellnessandaesthetics.ca to request an iron intake form. 

are iron infusions covered by ohip or insurance? 

Iron infusions at Thrive are not covered by OHIP, which is standard for infusion clinics across Ontario. Very few private insurance plans may cover part or all of the cost — please check with your provider directly for details if you have a benefit plan with your place of employment. Patients who have an HSA or WSA through work may have these services covered. 

what if i don’t have recent bloodwork results?

That’s okay! If you don’t have recent bloodwork results, or know what your iron levels are, our Nurse Practitioner can order bloodwork for you during your virtual consultation. Your bloodwork results are essential in determining whether infusions are appropriate and what dose is needed.

why are recent bloodwork results important?

Bloodwork results need to be 3 months old or less because red blood cells have a lifecycle of about 120 days, meaning they are replaced approximately every 4 months. Since iron plays a crucial role in the production of red blood cells, older bloodwork might not accurately reflect your current iron levels or the effectiveness of any treatments you’ve had. Recent blood tests provide the most accurate picture of your current iron status and overall blood health, ensuring that the iron infusion is properly tailored to your needs.

who oversees my treatment?

All iron infusions are overseen by our Medical Director who is a Nurse Practitioner, she reviews your intake form, orders any necessary bloodwork, and creates your personalized treatment plan. The infusions are administered by an experienced and specially trained infusion nurse in a safe, clinical environment. All infusion nurses are trained in managing, and monitoring patients who experience side effects, allergic reactions, and severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis related to iron infusions. 

where are you located?

We have two clinic locations in Manotick, and Kemptville to help serve patients in Ottawa-Gatineau and surrounding areas as well as rural areas like Osgoode, Winchester, Prescott, Brockville, and beyond. 

do i need any follow up appointments after my iron infusions? 

Follow-up bloodwork is required 6 weeks after your last infusion, and a requisition will be given to you by the Nurse Practitioner.
