Iron Deficiency & Women's Health
Why Low Iron Is So Common in Women
Iron deficiency is one of the most widespread nutritional issues worldwide, and women are disproportionately affected. The reasons are multifactorial, but they all tie back to the body’s increased need for iron compared to what is often consumed or absorbed through diet alone.
For many women, menstrual blood loss is the most significant factor. Even moderate monthly bleeding can gradually deplete iron stores, especially if intake isn’t enough to replace what is lost. Pregnancy adds another layer of demand—iron requirements increase dramatically to support both the growing baby and the mother’s own blood volume. Without supplementation or close monitoring, it’s easy for levels to fall.
Dietary patterns also play a role. Women may eat less red meat, which is one of the richest sources of easily absorbed heme iron, or may follow vegetarian or vegan diets where plant-based iron is not absorbed as efficiently. Even when iron is present in the diet, absorption can be limited by factors such as high intake of tea, coffee, or calcium, as well as underlying digestive issues like celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or chronic gastritis.
The end result is that many women find themselves chronically tired, struggling with low energy, brain fog, hair loss, or shortness of breath—without realizing iron deficiency is at the root. And because symptoms are often brushed off or mistaken for “just being busy” or “normal fatigue,” the problem frequently goes undiagnosed for far too long.
Improving Access to Iron Treatments in Ottawa
At Thrive Wellness & Aesthetics, we recognize how frustrating and life-altering iron deficiency can be—and how long patients often wait to access treatment through traditional pathways. That’s why we offer iron infusions for patients in Ottawa and the surrounding area. Our goal is not only to restore energy and wellness but also to bridge the gap in healthcare by reducing wait times and making treatment more accessible.
We believe no one should have to struggle with the effects of low iron when safe, effective treatment options are available. By improving access to iron infusions, we aim to help women (and men) in our community feel like themselves again—faster.
