It's not all in your head

Why Your Iron Levels May Be “Normal” but You Still Feel Tired

Many people know the frustration of feeling exhausted, foggy, and not like themselves. You visit your doctor looking for answers. Bloodwork shows “normal” iron levels, and your doctor reassures you. Yet you leave the office still drained of energy and still wondering why you feel so unwell.

Lab results don’t always tell the whole story. In Ontario, ferritin—the marker used to measure iron storage—counts as “normal” once it rises above 30. Some labs consider anything below 50 as low. If your ferritin sits between 30 and 50, your body may struggle even though the report looks fine. Many people in this range feel the classic signs of deficiency: fatigue, dizziness, restless legs, and brain fog.

Iron fuels your red blood cells so they can carry oxygen throughout your body. When ferritin hovers near the cutoff, your system lacks the reserves to keep up with daily life. Real relief often comes when ferritin reaches closer to 100. At that point, energy improves, mental clarity returns, and you feel ready to handle the day.

This gap between “normal” and “optimal” leaves many people stuck. Your doctor may say nothing is wrong, but your body keeps sending another message. That disconnect can feel discouraging, especially when you work hard to advocate for your health and push for real solutions.

You do have options. When you realize that “normal” doesn’t always mean healthy, you can take steps to restore your iron. Some people boost their levels through diet and supplements. Others—especially when symptoms persist—benefit from iron infusions that quickly replenish stores and bring energy back.

At Thrive Wellness & Aesthetics, we meet many patients who fall into this grey zone. Their bloodwork looks acceptable, but their quality of life tells a different story. By aiming for optimal iron levels instead of settling for the minimum, we help our patients feel like themselves again.

If your doctor says your iron looks fine but you still feel exhausted, don’t ignore the signs. Sometimes “normal” doesn’t equal healthy. Your body deserves to feel strong, clear, and full of energy.
